Hi friends! Want to know why I love being a San Diego senior photographer?! Because of sessions like this! I am so excited to share this Coronado senior session. Sam was my first senior session of 2018 and it was such a fun way to kick off the new year!
It is senior photo session season in San Diego and I feel so grateful to photograph so many seniors during this exciting time in their life. I have been getting so many inquiries for the beach lately. If you know me at all, you know this makes me incredibly happy. Photo sessions at the beach in San Diego are pretty much one of the best things ever. The beach is less crowded in the winter and the sunsets are always incredible!
Sam seriously rocked her session. She was so natural in front of the camera and wasn’t afraid to splash around in the water at the end of the session. I’m telling you, photos in the water always turn out amazing!!
A lot of my photography clients shy away from the beach for senior sessions because of the wind and weather. We did have some wind at Sam’s senior session but we definitely made it work. If it is a windy day, I always try to choose a beach that has more options. I love Coronado because there is so much variety. You don’t have to only shoot ON the beach during the session. If it’s super windy, we will start the session somewhere else on the island. I then move to the sand dunes which are always sun-soaked and gorgeous (my fav). As sunset approaches, we then move down towards the water. The wind normally calms down right around sunset and it is the PERFECT time for photos by the water. I always tell my clients that the last 20 minutes before sundown is BEST time for photos at the beach! The light becomes soft and the sky is colorful. It’s seriously my fav!
As a photographer, shooting at the beach can be really intimidating. I have come to embrace it! I love the soft colors and the gorgeous backdrop. I love to work with the sun to get fun and creative images. I always bring my reflector to bounce light on to my subject or to shade my subject if there are a ton of shadows. If you keep scrolling, you’ll see a little “behind the scenes” for one of the shots. If you’re a photographer and would like more tips on shooting at the beach, I’d love to help. When I first started shooting, I dreaded my sessions at the beach. Now I’m always trying to convince clients that the beach is the best place for photos!
Anyways, enough of the chatter. Scroll down to see some of my favorite photos from Sam’s senior session!
Here is the “behind the scenes” from this photos. I had Sam’s mom hold the reflector up to block some of the shadows on her face. I cropped and cloned the reflector out of the final image and removed distractions from the background. Do you want to see more “behind the scenes”? Let me know!
Sometimes you gotta embrace the wind! I love these windy hair shots! I almost didn’t include them in her gallery but they were too gorgeous not to!
A word of advice… Always stick your toes in the water. It’s worth it 100% of the time!
